Something attacked my onion seedlings - Can the Man - 04-06-2020

I planted some red onion seedlings in among some white onion seedlings which had established themselves last Monday only to find this evening they have been attacked by something either bird or animal.
They even managed to dislodge the name tag.

I will post photos in a few minutes when I resize

This is how they looked on Monday eveningĀ

Here you can see where they have been pulled up and choppedĀ

Here you can see them chopped and on the top left holes where they were pulled out

Anybody ever experienced this before or any ideas ?

Thanks

You can see all these little holes in the ground as well, I see them in the ground over near my peas which thankfully have not been touched. I thinks this calls for more nets.

That's what I'd go with as well, once one bird starts the others soon join in.

I found the culprit(s). Crows, not only did they wreck my newly sowed onions and my beetroot, they also went an attacked all the greens on my semi mature onions in the raised bed.

Commiserations CTM, it is so disheartening. I've never had crow trouble, but totally understand your fury, love the wildlife but sometimes I wish it would stay next door. Still haven't found the bunny in the garden, but as yet nothing's been eaten so maybe he escaped home.

CtM looks like the only way to stop them will be to net.

This sounds terrible. I wonder why they are picking on you? You will need to net or get a gun.

Once when the children were small, we had a crow that would perch in our apple tree next to the house and dive bomb into the windows every spring, starting earlier and earlier as mornings grew lighter creating a right racket. We ended up with black bin bags covering them so it couldn't see itself. It went on for about 5 springs. I borrowed a shot-gun off my wife's uncle but never was quick enough to ever use it.
